Data for IIoT

Handling data is an important (if not the most important) part of any IoT solution. The following figure gives a rough idea of the amount of different types of data that are being generated by various industrial devices and their sensors. Today, we generate at least 1 TB of data per flight in the aviation sector, 500 GB of data per blade of a gas turbine, 35 GB of data from each smart meter, and so on, and these numbers are going to grow exponentially over the next five years. So it is fair to say that the Internet of Things is not actually about things, its about the data that these things are generating.

Hence, it is increasingly going to become a big data and analytics problem:

As data gathering increases rapidly through sensors, especially in the industrial sector, big data technologies and techniques become an integral part of the IIoT stack. These big data technologies help address the challenges related to capture, curation, storage, search, sharing, transfer, analysis, and visualization.
